Stamp Collecting: Plate Blocks

In stamp collecting the term plate block refers to a grouping of stamps still connected together that includes selvage that shows the plate numbers from the print run. Some collectors consider these the best investment because stamp collectors pay a premium for these and they improve in value more quickly than single stamps. So why doesn't everyone get plates? Well, some people may not realize the advantages, and since the blocks value increases the initial investment for older block's can prove prohibitive (up to 4 times more expensive than single stamps).

Now, if you think this is a get rich quick concept think again. Stamp collecting overall takes time and effort to reap the highest values with the least risk. The longer the time you collect, and the more you educate yourself on what to collect, the greater the value your collection is likely to have, especially if it includes plate blocks. Note that some people only get one plate block per printing, while others get several hoping that the appreciation will yield rewards should they ever want to sell the extras.

How can you know what type of plate blocks to consider? Well the face value of a block is one starting point. Look at cost of the block vs. the value of the dollar at that time in history. If something cost $10 in 1920, for example, there probably were very few people buying. So, this also narrowed the supply window. This brings up another point supply and demand is still the name of the game in collecting. If the supply is limited, demand tends to be higher along with value/price.

Another consideration in plates is whether to gather commemorative or thematic stamps vs. regular issues. Truthfully, regular issue blocks appreciate better than commemorative and theme stamps for the most part. Why? The same reason supply and demand. People like commemorative and theme stamps because they're visually appealing and have specific sentiment behind them. In some cases the theme also corresponds with other personal collections (such as the person who collects a TV shows memorabilia AND that shows commemorative stamps). Meanwhile definitive (regular) stamps are well.. just stamps! This means the less fancy stamps don't sell as well, and don't get over printed.

Finally there are several other items that can add or take away value. For example, if the post office created a stamp that wasn't in sync with the postal rate at that time, that's going to be a good plate to buy. Or, if there is an error in a print run and you manage to get a block before they're recalled this can make that block incredibly desirable. Overall the best gift you can give yourself is learning. Take the time to know your hobby so you can also know how to value your stamp blocks properly.
