Evaluating Stamp Values
So youve started stamp collecting or come into possession of a collection. How do you begin to know if what youre choosing or looking at has any value? There are a variety of ways you can find out on your own without paying a service for an appraisal.
First, go to the source. The US Postal Service has a Guide to U.S. Stamps complete with color images, varieties and the most recent valuation on the stamps. Its not overly expensive, costing around $20.00, and is also neatly available online at usps.com. Note that this book only lists single stamps. It doesnt give the price for sheets.
An alternative book that includes the plates would be the Scott Catalog. Like the U.S. Post Office the stamps are pictured in color, but it adds the advantage of giving plate values. This book is three times as expensive as the Postal Services offering ($60) but you can sometimes find it at a local library under reference for free.
The third book thats often recommended by collectors is the Brookman Price Guide. This comes in black and white, spiral bound or perfect bound, costing around the same price as the US Postal Services offering ($20 plus delivery). While the price is right, the lack of color is a huge drawback especially for beginners. Also remember that this book provides retail value, not market value (that can make a difference, on average, of 30% from listing).
Now, if hunting through books isn't appealing you can consider joining a stamp club. Many such clubs will help you discern the value of your stamps for free. If there are no physical clubs in your area, check on line.
Now, having said all that, if you need to get an appraisal that will be accepted by insurance companies, you'll need an expert (such as an antique dealer, or someone who is certified in stamp evaluation. Such individuals can give you a much more detailed assessment of your collection and provide proper paperwork for your insurance company's use.
